FITNESS FRIDAY - The Power of Goal Setting in Diabetes Management 

Hi everyone, my name is Dr. B Jagadish and I am a Diabetes Wellbeing Coach. Welcome to our ongoing Diabetes Patient Education program.

Today, we're going to talk about the power of goal setting in diabetes management. If you have diabetes, you know that it requires ongoing attention and self-management. This can be overwhelming at times, but setting goals can help you stay on track and make progress in your journey to better health.

So, what is goal setting and why is it important? Goal setting is the process of defining what you want to achieve and establishing a plan to reach those goals. It helps you focus your efforts, stay motivated, and track your progress.

But it's not just about setting any goals – they need to be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. This is known as the SMART criteria for goal setting. Let's break this down:

Specific: Your goals should be clear and well-defined. For example, "I want to lose weight" is not a specific goal. "I want to lose 10 pounds in the next three months by exercising at least three times a week and eating a balanced diet" is a specific goal.

Measurable: Your goals should be measurable so you can track your progress. For example, "I want to improve my blood sugar control" is not a measurable goal. "I want to reduce my A1C from 8.5% to 7.5% in the next six months" is a measurable goal.

Achievable: Your goals should be realistic and achievable. If you set goals that are too difficult to achieve, you may become discouraged and give up. On the other hand, if your goals are too easy, you may not feel challenged and motivated to keep going.

Relevant: Your goals should be relevant to your overall health and well-being. For example, "I want to run a marathon" may not be relevant if you have never exercised before or if you have certain health conditions that make it difficult for you to run.

Time-bound: Your goals should have a timeline to help you stay on track and make progress. For example, "I want to improve my blood sugar control" is not a time-bound goal. "I want to reduce my A1C from 8.5% to 7.5% in the next six months" is a time-bound goal.

So, now that you know the importance of setting SMART goals, how do you get started?

Identify your priorities: What is most important to you in terms of your diabetes management? Is it improving your blood sugar control, losing weight, reducing your risk of complications, or something else?

Make a list of your goals: Write down your goals in a way that follows the SMART criteria. For example, "I want to lose 10 pounds in the next three months by exercising at least three times a week and eating a balanced diet."

Break down your goals into smaller steps: Break down your goals into smaller, more manageable steps. For example, if your goal is to lose 10 pounds in three months, you can start by setting a goal to lose 2-3 pounds per month.

Create a plan: Create a plan to help you achieve your goals. This may include setting a schedule for exercise and meal planning, finding a support system, and tracking your progress.

Review and revise your goals: As you work towards your goals, it's important to review and revise them as needed. Don't be afraid to make adjustments if you find that your goals are too Difficult.
